New Wonder Book Cyclopedias

Design bindings (fancy decoration in fine binding with leather inlays, onlays, gold tooling etc.) influenced this series of collages utilizing mid-twentieth century children's encyclopedia covers. Historic designs are mimicked in spirit if not material for The New Wonder Book Cyclopedia of World Knowledge. The paper and board covers are inlaid with glossy magazine images and lines of text, but utilize techniques not unfamiliar to fine binding. The tradition of a fine binding is to embody the content of the text. This tradition is subverted here by making reference to the world outside the book and preying on our voyeuristic tendencies — we just like to look. I'm not judging the book by its cover, but trying to create character in its content (apologies to Dr. King).

Part of the "Encyclopornia" series presented in "Beyond/In Western New York," 2010.
